Family Small Business Advice. Etsy Thoughts on the Indie Life.

Just thinking about small biz advice...We were so honored to be over on Design Sponge recently dishing out some family biz advice. But really- what the hell do we know? We are still swinging wildly from the learning curve.... :)
BUT- we do love to talk shop with others and we get a lot of emails and Etsy.com convos asking for advice or just to chat and vent about running a family business.

This is one thing I have been thinking about:

A family business will instill the entrepreneurial spirit in children.

It's never too early to talk to the whole family about why you do the work you do.

Our children are living this magical (but real) narrative of what it is like to follow your dreams- what it is like to change gears and choose happiness.

They will someday tell their college roomies over cold beers that their parents were toy makers.

This is ace.

Yes yes yes A! One thing I have realized is that my work (like yours) is now so tangible (um, in a way being a music and brain scientist totally wasn't). Laurel has told me many times that she wants to grow up and be an artist too and work alongside me.

Which I would totally dig.

This is so true, I need to remember that he is watching and absorbing everything. So what I do matters.

Thank you for reminding me of this... sometimes as I am packaging an order and answering my son's math question while my two year old dumps his orange juice I wonder if the at home business is worthwhile. But all you wrote is true and my husband and I always come back to the conclusion the positives outweigh the negatives.
Warm wishes, Tonya

My parents changed gears when I was 12. Up and moved us across the country, leaving their businesses and lives behind.

It ultimately frees you, as a child. It's terrifying when it happens, but for the rest of my life I knew that nothing could stop me. There are no real rules for life.
