Five Minute Breakfast Poems
we will have dinner tonight with my old college roomie
one of the people that lived with us in an old converted office building
the one that still felt like an office building
and his room was so neat and tidy
and my mom would pop round sometimes on her way to a nearby client
oh the horrors
only sometimes I would be in class
or in a car
traveling at fast speeds away from school
towards the next big thing
and this one time I came back and she was inside of his tidy room
sitting on his purple tapestry covered futon
watching One Life to Live with him
and he was smiling and I was wide eyed
because all around her were posters of Bob Marley
and pot in true beautiful bud form
like marijuana pornography
and giant bongs and tiny pipes
and scales and screens
tapped out in the ashtray in front of her handbag
but all she saw was a college boy
and his incredible possibility
she saw his clear blue eyes
and his sweet heart
and she promised to bring him baked goods
as you do
and there were many days like that
where we pretended not to notice all the things
about each other that we did not understand
and tonight I will break bread with him and his gorgeous family
and it will be similar to the old days
because it's always been about the moment
the slowing down of time
